This is an old theme for this post, but it’s a good one.
As you should well know by now, Gain’s product development is customer-led (as illustrated by former posts here, here, here, here, here, and here.) So, why do I keep coming back to this?
Two reasons:
First, a high-level point: Gain’s progress is not only observable through the market success of our Statutory Reporting solution, but also how we’ve developed as a company. Gain has a talented team operating in product-led culture; this unlocks opportunities for continuous improvement of our filing solution as well as across additional use cases. We are well-positioned to press our advantage.
Secondly, it’s really fun to check in from time-to-time to see the impact of our approach on customer outcomes.
Most recently, Gain rolled out Advanced Permissions.
You guessed it – this is functionality that our customers have been requesting. And, just as importantly, our customers provided valuable insight and direction with regards to the feature design.
For example, our permissions model is multi-dimensional. At a base level, an account admin can assign users to be Manager, Editor, or Viewer roles. Each comes with the expected and logical functions based on title.
On a second level, Editors can also be granted (or restricted) permission within a filing based upon which schedules and which Notes are relevant.
And, as expected, configuring and editing these permissions is intuitive and efficient.
But….it’s also different from what I had initially expected. Candidly, from my initial understanding of the business needs for this feature, I thought the product team would take a very granular, bottoms-up approach in which individualized permissions are configured on a user-by-user basis.
Instead, what was built – again, through collaboration between Gain’s product teams and our customers – is far more elegant. Based on detailed research and customer discovery, there are sixteen different role-based permission groups that align with financial reporting teams roles and usage patterns. Administration is fast and easy. And, the finished product is getting rave reviews.
Increasingly, the largest U.S. carriers are switching from their legacy software to Gain’s solution as our modern platform supports collaboration, security, and access requirements for the most complex filing processes. For those of us who focus on how thoughtful, well-designed software improves outcomes for challenging use cases, it’s gratifying to see how customer needs and feedback drive outcomes.
